The History of Dominion
John Preston (JP) and Arthur Briggs (Art) met in the 1970s, working at the same Customs Brokerage House. They shared a remarkably similar belief that importers were simply paying too much in duties and taxes to the government. So, in 1981, they decided to leave the Brokerage House and create Dominion Customs Consultants Inc., pioneering the duty recovery industry for importers in Canada.
From the beginning, Art & JP recognized that while recovering duties already paid to the Canadian government was important to importers, it was more important that the importers had peace of mind that these recoveries were not going to create a problem for them in the future.
As a result, Art & JP employed a conservative, rulings-based approach to duty recovery, ensuring that they protected their client's brand at all times. This quickly earned Dominion a reputation as a trusted name and a valuable resource for importers across North America.
With the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in 1991, it did not take long for companies to begin questioning how they could recover these taxes paid to the Canadian government.
Our clients, pleased with the results that we generated with our Duty Recovery Programs, started asking us for assistance in recovering the sales taxes that they paid.
In response to the requests of our clients, Art & JP created Dominion Sales Tax Consultants Inc.
As the 1990s were ending, and companies were preparing for Y2K, our clients’ needs evolved and expanded from simply protecting their revenue, to protecting their brand.
Importers had performed comprehensive internal reviews of their systems and processes and identified the need to strengthen their Customs Compliance programs. Once again, our clients turned to Dominion for support, and Art & JP responded.
They assembled a team of customs industry experts and created a Customs Compliance Department at Dominion.
The objectives of this group were simple,
- To understand the customs regulations better than the policymakers who created them.
- To develop Customs Compliance programs to ensure our clients received the support & expertise they had come to expect from Dominion.
- To minimize our client’s risk of customs non-compliance.
As technology was opening the world of e-commerce for many companies and dramatically changing their supply chains, once again, our clients turned to Dominion to help them develop, integrate, & execute duty recovery and customs compliance programs on a global scale.
Leveraging our conservative, ruling-based, protect your brand first approach, we continued to provide support and be that trusted customs resource for our clients, as they expanded into new and exciting markets.
We continue to grow with our clients, responding to the new challenges they face.
Whether we are supporting your team with compliance programs, executing a portion or all of your daily custom’s operational tasks, and/or delivering a variety of duty recovery and revenue-saving programs, our goal remains the same since Art & JP’s first day in 1981, to earn and become your trusted customs resource.
